Zanzibar is Tanzania's best-known beach destination, combining beaches on the north and east coasts with the historic Stone Town . Popular areas include Nungwi and Kendwa in the north for lively beach life and sunsets, and Paje, Jambiani and Bwejuu on the east coast for quieter stretches of sand and kitesurfing.
Pemba lies north of Zanzibar and sees far fewer visitors. Known for lush hills, clove plantations and some of the best diving in East Africa, it suits travelers who want a genuine escape rather than a developed resort scene.
South of Zanzibar, Mafia Island is part of a protected marine park and is best known for swimming with whale sharks, usually between October and March, along with excellent diving and snorkeling on largely untouched reefs.
January to mid-March: warm, dry conditions and fewer climbers
June to October: the most popular window, with clear skies and stable weather
Rainy seasons (roughly April to May and November) are possible but wetter, muddier and colder higher up. Summit night is cold in every season, so pack accordingly.
